My Introduction and Entrepreneurship to Me

This is the first blog I’ve ever written, so hopefully I’m doing this right. My name is Charlotte Esteves and I’m currently a senior at Simmons University pursuing a dual degree in Arts Administration (on the music management track) and Music History. I am a classically trained violinist and hope to one day work as an arts administrator for an orchestra based in or around the Boston area. To be completely honest, this entrepreneurship class was not my first choice in the classes I was able to take for this semester, but I am going to make the best of it.

I have never seen myself as a leader, which is what I think of when I think of entrepreneurs, although when it comes to my hobbies and interests I am very passionate. One of my hobbies is doing my makeup on myself and my friends when we go out. The process of it is very calming for me and the art of makeup excites me. My dream job is to be a makeup artist, that is if what I’m pursuing in college doesn’t work out in the long run. Doing makeup for models to go on runways, for brides about to get married, or even for regular people wanting to get their makeup done, I think being a makeup artist is something that I would never get tired of.

I see many social media influencers becoming owners of their own makeup companies and releasing products for consumers based on what they think they would like. These are the first people I think of when I think of entrepreneurs, because many of them started by simply making YouTube videos of themselves doing their makeup and they have grown into the CEOs of their own makeup companies. The idea of being able to come up with my own unique makeup products, working in the labs with chemists to perfect the formulas, doing the makeup for the ad campaigns, etc. is exciting, though for me it seems like it may just remain a dream of mine.

I never saw myself taking an entrepreneurship class in college because I just figured that it is not something that I would ever become. Honestly, when I thought of entrepreneurship classes before, I thought of a class full of men who are business majors at Northeastern and already have planned what they want to do for their startups after graduation. Entrepreneurs to me are a certain type of person who create something new and innovative, someone who is constantly thinking of the next best thing and wants to make a difference.

Even if I don’t become an entrepreneur, I hope that this class will open my eyes to a different way of thinking. As someone who sees themselves in the music nonprofit world in ten years, I think creativity is crucial. Coming up with innovative ways to bring music to the public is what will be the future for the arts in America.

  1. Hi Charlotte,

Welcome to the course! I really enjoyed your first post -- very thorough text but would encourage you to use visuals in your future blogs. Your motivation for taking this class is spot on and I think you'll really enjoy learning about the creativity of entrepreneurship. Sounds like this definitely applies to you as someone who would like to have their own makeup company! I am looking forward to reading more of your work.
